John Muir was born in Dunbar, Scotland, on April 21 1838. Growing up, he loved wildlife and nature even though there was not much nature around him since Scotland was grey and urbanized. Therefore it was not very surprising that the first sounds of nature Muir heard was the sound of pigeons screeching. As stated by John Muir, "When I was a boy in Scotland, I was fond of everything that was wild, and all my life I've been growing fonder and fonder of wild places and wild creatures."
The picture on the left shows John Muir's Childhood home. It shows that Scotland was actually quite urbanized during Muir's childhood. He grew up in a combination of a house and a store for the grain business, the house was always a little bit tight because Muir had 7 other siblings.
According to the Sierra Vault-John Muir Exhibit ,"The main entrance was in the middle, and on the right Muir's father kept a store where he sold flour and grain. The parlor was at the left of the entrance and the living-rooms above".

Later on his family moved to USA to live in Wisconsin. There his father, who was a religious man with very high values and morals became a Presbyterian Church Minister. Muir enjoyed Wisconsin because there was no shortage of wildlife and greenery for him to explore.
